Abstract

Only 29 years old at the moment of his assassination, Josep M. Planes had made himself a place among the greats of Catalan journalism. A master of investigative reporting, chronicler of Barcelona sleep-walking before the war, observer of the sport of the masses and visible head of the satirical weekly El Be Negre, Planes excelled as an analyst of the diverse social dynamics generated by republican Catalonia. Unjustly forgotten for decades, this article studies the figure of the first Catalan reporter to lose his life in service to his writing.
